"Bhajis are deep-fried chickpea fritters and as Newport Beach is only a little walk away, this restaurant is aptly named,' says our Northern beaches food reporter Kay richardson. She really likes this cosy, relaxed eatery that specialises in regional dishes from across southern India. Bhajis are made with a batter of besan (chickpea flour) and spices like cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. There's a great range of vegetarian options to select and a mixed platter of onion bhaji, garlic chicken tikka, chop Malabar (lamb chops marinated in south Indian spices) and meatballs served with fresh mint yoghurt and a tamarind sauce. For a bit of heat, Kay says, 'chicken chettinad is a fantastic blend of chilli, mustard seeds and pickled onions'. Kay, who is a kids' food champion (with her own kids' food website), believes mango chicken is a good way to start expanding young tastes. For something different, try a selection of chutneys with masala dosai (thin and crispy rice and urad dal pancakes). She likes the authentic feel of every dish; cooked to order, full of texture and flavour 'with spices you can actually see' on the dishes."
